far as Talk ’N Text deputy coach Nash Racela is concerned, his brother
Olsen, Petron’s rookie coach, has what it takes to be a champion coach
sooner rather than later. While Petron's rough outing on Olsen's debut season as head coach may not be cause for optimism, Nash is convinced it’s just a matter of time before his brother figures everything out and settles down on the job.
“I watched the (Petron quarterfinals) game against San Mig (Coffee). Sabi ko sa kanya, very evident na may direction na naman ang team. Parang alam na nila ang gusto nilang gawin. At nakakapa na niya (Olsen) ang coaching,” Nash, now in his third season as Talk 'N Text assistant coach, told Spin.ph.
The Boosters finished the Philippine Cup with a 6-8 record, overcoming a miserable 2-3 (win-loss) start that led to the firing of coaching consultant Rajko Toroman who until then had been a strong presence beside Racela on the Petron bench.
Petron went 4-5 with Racela as a full-pledged head coach and appeared to be hitting its stride, but any momentum it gathered up to that point vanished into thin air when the San Miguel group's flagship team blew a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against Alaska, 79-71, in its final elimination-round game.
That relegated them to seventh place and a quarterfinal match-up with a twice-to-beat San Mig squad, which came roaring back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter on the way to a 92-87 win that ended Petron's conference.
Despite the disappointment, Nash feels the early exit may be a blessing in disguise for Olsen and the Boosters who now have more time to prepare for the import-laced Commissioner's Cup - so unlike in the Philippine Cup where Olsen joined the team just days before the season owing to his commitment with the Under-18 national team.
“Ngayon mas mahaba ang preparation ni Olsen sa second conference. He just has to be patient. Of course, experience can be factor in those losses. But the players are also responsible for that," Nash said.
“Dumadaan talaga sa ganyang ang mga coaches. But it’s a learning experience for him. They (Boosters) just need to do what they need to do and the results will take care of themselves,” he added.
