“Coach Richard recommended me sa athletic director when he stepped down. Then the whole December, I was the interim coach until we had the break. Actually, I was already coaching the CSB team in the Fr. Martin Cup,” said Buendia, whose Elasto Painters squad is facing del Rosario’s Mixers team in the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.
Buendia, who has served as an assistant at CSB to both del Rosario and Caloy Garcia, said that he is in the running to take over in a permanent capacity.
“Tapos na yung interview nung Friday, December 21. The interview went well. There were two brothers from La Salle, the athletic director and one representative from the school administration who acted as the panel,” he said.
Buendia banks on his familiarity with the Blazers, as well as school policies, to be his advantage.
“They were looking for continuity pa din from Coach Richard. I was already given a free hand by him to do what I want to do. Right now, I’m still implementing some of his plays. I’m just adding some plays,” said Buendia, who added that being a product of San Beda and Ateneo is not an obstacle to his taking over CSB.
“Hindi naman nila sinabi na dapat alumnus ka. Actually, ang sabi sa akin, dalawa na lang kami na pinagpipilian. It’s just me and Gabby Velasco nalang. We’re just waiting for the decision then,” he said.
“Probably, when we resume in January na yun. Wala kasi ngayon yhng overall head ng athletics, si Brother Dante.”
