ERRING PLAYERS FINED, NO SUSPENSIONS

The PBA Commissioner’s Office fined Alaska’s Cyrus Baguio P30,000 Thursday for hitting Talk N’ Text guard Jason Castro in Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series between the Aces and the Tropang Texters last Wednesday.
Castro was on his way to the basket with 5:59 remaining in the fourth quarter when Baguio rushed after him and hit the side of the face of Castro with his arm with no chance of getting to the ball. The act was excessive and unnecessary, and Baguio was correctly called for a flagrant foul penalty 2 that led to his ejection.
“No suspension is being meted out in this particular case after taking into consideration Baguio’s explanation that he was indeed going to give Jayson Castro a hard foul but realized at the last instance that he no longer had a chance to play for the ball he tried to check himself but it was already too late to avoid the resulting contact,” said Commissioner Salud.
“A close look at the replay confirms Baguio’s narration there was no blatant follow through of his arm as it hit Castro’s face. It was decidedly sheer momentum on his part that largely caused the hard contact on Castro,” added Salud.
Also fined were rookie Calvin Abueva, Gabby Espinas and Sonny Thoss of Alaska and forwards Jarred Dillinger and Kelly Williams of TNT.
Abueva was fined P2,400 for his second motion technical foul against Castro and another P5,000 for drawing a flagrant foul penalty 1 for tripping Harvey Carey.
Espinas was slapped P5,000 while Dillinger and Thoss were penalized P1,000 each.
Espinas drew a flagrant foul penalty 1 for his fighting stance against Dillinger, who was called for a technical foul for second motion along with Thoss in a game eventually won by the Tropang Texters, 93-79 for a 2-1 lead in the best-of seven series.
William also was fined P1,000 for his second motion technical foul on Abueva in Game 2 won by the Aces, 100-88, to tie the series at one game apiece. (DBC)
