MANILA, Philippines (PBA All Philippine Cup): Ryan Reyes' last-gasp trey took twice defending champions Talk N Text to a 66-65 win over Alaska Aces, while 2011-12 PBA Governor’s Cup winners Rain or Shine didn’t raise much sweat in beating San Mig Coffee 91-83 in Game 1 of the semifinals of the 2012-13 PBA All Philippine Cup on Wednesday.
In his only success, out of four attempts from beyond the arc, Reyes produced the decisive moment for the Texters (pic above), who shut their rivals completely in the final two-and-half minutes after having trailed at the start of the fourth period.
“The ball wasn’t for Ryan (Reyes), but the good thing was he was able to step up and take the shot,” said Talk N Text coach Norman Black.
Jayson Castro, who set up Reyes for the final go, led TnT’s scoring with 17 points. Ranidel De Ocampo added 11 points.
Sonny Thoss’ led Alaska with 14 points and as many rebounds. Calvin Abueva, playing his first semifinals game, too had a double-double – 10 points and 17 rebounds – with RJ Jazul coming off the bench for 11 points.
“It’s very difficult for us, and I’m happy with the team mainly because we grind it out. It showed what the team is made of,” said Black.
“We could have given up but grind it out in the end,” Black added.
“Obviously, they did a lot of good things and we have to go back and take a look at the game.”
“(What we showed) gives us hope,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.
“If there’s really a team you idolize, it’s Talk n Text. They had four championships in the last three years. The game boiled down to breaks of the game and I hope we build on that,” said Trillo.
Jeff Chan scored 18 points, in a 6/10 field shooting, and last season’s Rookie of the Year Paul Lee added 15 points as Rain or Shine outhustled San Mig in a repeat result of last year’s Governor’s Cup Finals.
"We executed our offense well. I'm happy with the way we moved the ball," said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
Larry Rodriguez added 15 points in the win with Beau Belga returning an impressive night on all fronts with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block.
Yancy De Ocampo’s 17 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists led San Mig. Marc Pingris had 14 points and half as many rebounds.
