Did you see this coming? Coach Ronnie Magsanoc called it quits with San Beda. |
A shocking news rocked the college basketball
scene as San Beda Red Lions head coach Ronnie Magsanoc, citing personal
reasons, announced his resignation just a couple of months off of the
Lions' successful NCAA championship quest, their league-best 17th overall (although there are rumors that he's taking his talents to the dark red side of college basketball, i.e. UP, which a friend of Magsanoc denied).
With that, the name Frankie Lim resurfaced (more on him later). Aside
from Lim, two more coaches are in the top cinches for the new San Beda
coach. Get to know them here.
Tale of the Tape
Name: Teodorico Fernandez III
Also Known As: Boyet, Coach Boyet
Claim to Fame: Current NLEX coach, former coach of UP and Sta. Lucia, current Meralco assistant coach, an underrated point guard during his PBA playing days, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, NLEX Road Warriors

First on the list is Boyet
Fernandez, the current head coach of the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA
D-League. A former star point guard in the PBA (that many don't know
thanks to the likes of Bal David and Johnny Abarrientos), Fernandez
never thought he would win a PBA title in his coaching debut season as
he led Sta. Lucia to its last PBA title before the Realtors sold their franchise to Meralco, where Coach Boyet is now an assistant to Ryan Gregorio. Boyet is no stranger to college basketball coaching
as he took over Aboy Castro as the head coach of the UP Fighting
Maroons (Fernandez was the lone non-UP alumnus in the last three tenures
to coach the Maroons), only to lose 12 straight. (Update: San Beda's
big backer Manny Pangilinan refers Coach Boyet as the new San Beda
coach, giving the latter an advantage leading to the official announcement on Saturday. More on the news here.)
Name: Jamike Jarin
Also Known As: Coach Jamike, Coach Mike
Claim to Fame: Current Talk 'n Text assistant coach, former coach of the Ateneo De Manila High School Blue Eaglets, Kiefer Ravena

Then there's Jamike Jarin, the former head coach of the Ateneo Blue
Eaglets in the UAAP high school war. Honing the likes of Kiefer Ravena,
who is shining in the seniors like in his junior years, Jarin can also
make something out of the relatively young core of the San Beda roster,
especially the overnight sensations "SuperSix".
Name: Frankie Lim
Also Known As: Coach Frankie, Papa Lim to daughter Miakka, soon to be called Papa Lim by Alex Mallari too
Claim to Fame: The brain behind San Beda's four NCAA championships
in a five-year span, former member of the 1978 NCAA champions team,
former PBA star, the Red Lions, Coach Roger Gorayeb, his "extended"
family, and that nasty brawl

Like I mentioned above, Coach Frankie Lim became the man of the moment
just hours after the news on Coach Ronnie's resignation broke out. While
I believe that many Bedans want him back, it could be a very hard
process. Lim has only served the top half of his two-year suspension
from NCAA coaching due to the infamous San Beda-San Sebastian brawl at
the earlier's gym last year, and the only way to make Coach Frankie
eligible again is if the NCAA decides to cancel the final year of
effectivity of his suspension, something that is still tackled until
today. (Update: And it might even get tougher as MVP announced his
preference of having Boyet Fernandez as the new San Beda coach [check
the link above]. However, San Beda still has a final say on it.)
