For some players and supporters of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, officiating was an issue why they easily allowed semifinals rival San Mig Coffee to tie their best-of-7 semifinal series.
But for Coach Yeng Guiao, blame should also be directed to his players.
In his after game message to the Elasto Painters, Guiao rid himself of the usual blood vessel bursting routine.
Instead, the 3rd termer Pampanga Vice Governor admonished his players to be a lot tougher as the series against powerhouse San Mig Coffee approaches the crucial stretch.
“Hindi natin dapat katwiran yung pito ng mga referees. Sabi niyo nga ang sama ng tawag. Eh, ang sama din ng laro natin,” chided Guiao, who is known for his strict and no nonsense coaching.
The fiery coach even cracked a joke that changed the gloomy mood inside the locker room, saying: “Parang nag-usap-usap kayo na sabay-sabay lumaro ng hindi maganda eh.”
After his less than 5-minute message, Guiao went on to announce their break from practice Saturday, then went on to carefully review the stats sheet in one corner of the room.
Meanwhile at the Mixers’ huddle, Coach Tim Cone reiterated how proud he was of his wards.
“I am so proud of how we played as a team, this time. We got a little discouraged after the first game. Rain or Shine is a great team. But with this win, at least we know we can beat them. We just have to keep this A-game,” said Cone.
San Mig Coffee forward Joe Devance even decribed to pba.ph the atmosphere inside their locker room: “You can tell the difference from Game 1 and Game 2 by how he (Cone) was.”
Devance was also quick to refute the claim of Rain or Shine supporters about the officiating.
“I thought the refs called it fair. We won because we played as a team both on offense and defense. And we just went harder in this game,” quipped Devance will shaking his head. (SBadua)
