Calvin Abueva celebrates after making a basket. AKTV/Paolo PapaAlaska prized rookie Calvin Abueva doesn’t mind hitting the deck, eating elbows, and receiving dirty fouls.
Instead of hitting back, the second overall pick has kept himself focused to try to help the team win.
“Yun ang laging iniisip ko. Kesa gumanti ako, mas iniisip ko kailangan ako ng team kaya focused na lang ako sa game,” said Abueva.
“Ganyan talaga, kasama sa laro ‘yan.”
In Alaska’s win Friday over Talk ‘N Text at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, Abueva was the recipient of a rough hit from Aaron Aban, who was called for a flagrant foul penalty one on the play.
But The Beast had the last laugh, as he sparked the Aces with 20 points and 14 rebounds to tie the series.
Alaska coach Luigi Trillo said it’s nothing new for Abueva.
“I haven’t seen any league with Calvin playing na hindi siya binabanatan,” said Trillo. “It doesn’t surprise me.”
But Alaska isn’t just going take all the hits sitting down, with Trillo saying his team could dish out punishent too.
“We don’t wannt give dirty fouls, but we wanna give physical fouls,” he said.
